Face
Our face is an important part of our body. It identifies us, we greet the world with our smiling faces, and so much of human communication takes place with the interaction of our face.
However, with time, sun exposure, gravity, and the stress of daily life change the appearance of our faces. No longer do we have to accept the dark, uneven skin that comes from overexposure to the sun, or the deep creases or signs of jowling or hanging tissue around the neck, so often seen in our grandparents and are seen as signs of aging.
Facelift:
The procedure called a facelift takes care of the lower half of the face and neck. Over the past few years different types of facelift have been developed. We will discuss the two major groups; the traditional facelift and the so-called mini-facelift.
Indication: Facelifts are usually indicated for patients over 40 years of age. Both men and women are candidates for the procedure. Usually patients can easily see for themselves the effects of aging and the resulting sagging skin of the face. The procedure does not change your appearance, but gives a refreshed look.
Operative Technique:
The procedure is performed by placing incisions before and behind the ear. The skin is lifted and retracted, as is the tissue underlying the skin. The excess skin is removed and the underlying tissue is tightened, then the skin is sutured closed.
Recovery:
Initially the sutures are covered by a wrapped bandage. This is usually removed and a lighter dressing is replaced the next day and kept on for 24 hours.
There is usually some bruising post-operatively and occasionally a drainage tube is placed around the neck. The procedure is usually not a very painful procedure and is done in an out-patient setting. After 1-2 days, most patients are back on their feet, ambulating well and are able to take care of themselves.
Patients are encouraged not to plan any important social activities for about two weeks after surgery. Bruising and swelling make take that time to resolve. Driving may resume when the patient is no longer taking narcotic pain medication.
