Correction of Breast Asymmetry

Most people’s bodies are not exactly symmetrical. Most of us will admit to having one foot larger than the other, many of us notice slight differences in the way our eyes are positioned on our faces, and the majority of women have breasts that aren’t identical. In most cases, the differences are so slight that we ignore them. In other cases, the differences aren’t so easy to ignore. If you are considering cosmetic surgery in Michigan to correct breast asymmetry, it is obviously a significant problem that causes you frustration on a daily basis.

It can also be embarrassing on a nightly basis. No matter how kind and understanding your partner may be, no matter how sincerely they express their feelings about the person you are inside, you wish you could feel more proud of yourself on the outside.

Dr. Sampson has corrected breast asymmetry for many women in Lansing, Ann Arbor and other cities with breast augmentation in Michigan or breast reduction. Why not request an appointment to meet him?

Surgery Overview

When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Sampson will review your options with you. Many women choose to have their smaller breast augmented with a silicone or saline implant. In that case, surgery is relatively routine and easy to recover from. Some women decide to have their larger breast reduced in size. Breast reduction is slightly more involved than augmentation, but the surgery is still straightforward and poses mostly minor risks and complications.

No matter which option you choose, you’ll find having your procedure in our state-of-the-art operating suite to be safe, comfortable, and private. Each individual on our team is well-trained and fully-licensed; we look forward to caring for you.

Preparation and Recovery

We’ll help you prepare for breast surgery as we do with all Michigan patients. We’ll take a complete medical history during your consultation, and we’ll discuss factors that may influence your experience such as diet, exercise, medications, smoking, and alcohol consumption. We’ll acquaint you with what to expect on the day of your procedure including what to wear, what to bring, and so on. We’ll advise you to have someone ready to pick you up after surgery and stay with you for a day or two as needed.

If you’ve decided to have breast augmentation, the bulk of your recovery will take place in about a week. With breast reduction it may take about a week longer. You will experience some discomfort that can be controlled by prescription or over-the-counter medication as needed. You’ll be ready to begin resuming normal activities within one to two weeks, gradually adding more strenuous activities as the healing process continues. We’ll advise you to get plenty of rest, especially during the first few days following your procedure, as you will tire more easily than usual.

Risks and Complications

All surgical procedures carry some level of risk; correcting breast asymmetry is no different. A fraction of patients will experience unusual swelling, bleeding, infection, or other complications. Most complications related to breast augmentation and breast reduction are easily corrected on an outpatient basis.

Additional risks related to breast augmentation include capsular contracture and implant rupture. Breast reduction risks include the inability to breast feed and the potential loss of nipple sensation.

Most women who elect to have their breast asymmetry corrected have a smooth surgical experience and are very pleased with their results.
