Michigan Breast Lift Overview
Breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, is similar to breast reduction. Dr. Sampson most often makes an incision known as an anchor incision from the areola down to the crease under the breast and outward on both sides. He removes excess skin that has sagged over the years, repositions the nipple and areola, and reshapes the breast by bringing down skin from around the nipple and stitching it together. Many Michigan women elect breast lift surgery in combination with breast augmentation in Michigan for added volume and a firm feel, and some decide to combine breast lift with breast reduction for a completely refreshed, younger-looking profile.
Women who have smaller breasts and minimal sagging can sometimes have parallel incisions around the areola to remove excess skin and tighten the breast position. This technique is known as a “doughnut” incision.
The surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia and takes 90 minutes to three and a half hours. Preparation and Recovery
When you come in for your consultation with Dr. Sampson, he’ll take measurements and discuss your goals with you. He’ll take a complete medical history, and counsel you about factors that can influence healing such as smoking. He’ll educate you about what you can expect the day of your surgery and afterward. By the time your surgery date arrives, you’ll be well informed and prepared for a smooth experience.
After surgery is complete and you have some time to recover, you’ll go home with gauze dressings and an elastic bandage or a surgical bra. Dressings and sutures will be removed in a few days. It’s normal to experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort for the first two or three days. These conditions can be managed with medication and they tend to subside rather quickly. Many people return to work and some of their lighter activities in one week, the rest within two weeks. More strenuous activities such as vigorous exercise and heavy lifting need to be added back to your routine slowly and carefully.
Risks and Complications
Few of Dr. Sampson’s Michigan patients have problems after breast lift surgery. Risks common to all types of surgeries are possible, however, including infection, excessive swelling, and wound problems. These conditions are almost always treatable in Dr. Sampson’s office.
Other complications that occasionally occur include numbness in the breasts or nipples. This most often subsides, though a small fraction of patients experience numbness indefinitely. Patients sometimes find their scars to be unacceptable. Though excessive scarring is also rare, scars can be reduced in Dr. Sampson’s office on an outpatient basis.
